Haylee couldn't make the party but she is coming to visit this weekend and we are looking forward to having our little princess.

Fun Weekend

Cameron ran the Tri in the Pines triathlon this weekend and we went out to cheer him on.

He came in 2nd in his age group, about 6 minutes ahead of the next guy. He would like to have finished faster but we all thought he did great.

The firemen let Tyce and Haylee play in their ATV while they waited for Cameron to cross the finish line.

This little pricess is always all about the fashion. Here she is looking cool in her shades.

These two were inseperable all weekend. They are best buddies.

Didn't get many pictures of Teegan aka "Lunch Box" this weekend cuz he's still tool little to get out much. We had a blast with all the kids and they love seeing each other and playing together. My parents are here from Texas and they got to see all of their great grandkids so that was a lot of fun for them. Next up is Teegan's blessing.

Camping

We took a trip up to Greens Peak last weekend and did a little camping. Here is the face of a happy little camper after an afternoon trip into Greer for ice cream.

This is a beaver dam on the creek at Sheeps Crossing.

Tyce thought this place was pretty cool and enjoyed throwing rocks and sticks in the water.

Here"s the women fixing foil dinners, Kendall followed it up with a dutch oven cobbler.

This was a happy little camper all weekend. You can't beat acres of dirt, rocks, sticks and bugs.

I thought I would put up some more pictures from our most excellent trip to San Diego.

There is a paved bike path that goes clear around Coronado and it's a real easy ride.

Penny and I are in San Diego staying at the Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island. This is an old historic hotel that was built in 1888. The movie Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis was filmed here. We have always thought Coronado Beach was the best beach in the area and the hotel backs right up to it.

Here Penny and I are on the beach in front of the hotel. It was a little breezy and cool today but still really nice.

Mother's Day with the Grandkids

We had a blast with grandkids this weekend! Tyce spent the weekend with us and Haylee came for a visit. Here are some pictures of some cute little people.

They really adore each other were delighted to see each other.

We went to Phoenix this weekend for my Grandpa's 97th birthday party. We got a 5 generation picture and some of him with his Great - Great Grandkids. Not many kids get to know their Great - Great Grandpa!

Another Year Older

Well, I turned 51 on Saturday. Yes, I'm a Valentine baby. I tell Penny I'm a born lover. Picture her rolling her eyes. I used to think people in their 50's were so old but I feel like i'm in better shape now than 20 years ago. We had a great time celebrating with friends on Saturday and then on Sunday, our kids and grandkids came over. Tyce and Haylee had a good time playing together. They are little buddies and are really cute together. I got some good pictures of them so here you go...

What We've Been Up To

Well things have definetly quieted down around our house. Becky and the kids are back in Alaska and Matt is somewhere between here an Iraq. I am taking classes at University of Phoenix to complete my bachelors degree. I found out that my sister Becky is also taking the same classes but is a few weeks ahead of me. Great minds think alike I guess.

If I don't learn anything else this first semester, I will learn time management. I have assignments almost everyday of the week. I only have to sign in to class 3 days a week so I can work ahead which I am trying to do in case I have internet problems or a power failure. So far I am staying on top of it and I am actually enjoying it.

One of my first assignments was to write a paper on an author that I felt a rapport with and one that I didn't feel a rapport with. What!? Wouldn't that require reading books? I don't think Motor Trend magazine qualifies either. They're talking about books with no pictures. I knew I was in trouble. I did remember a couple of real books I had read during my 10 years of junior college and managed to fake it pretty good.

We have been blessed as far as work goes. We have been steady, not busy, but we have enough to sustain us. We locked in our own mortgage at 4.75%. The last time rates were this low, I was 2 months out on appraisals. Right now we are only 1 week out. Crazy.

Eskimo Invasion

Alaska invaded Arizona yesterday! My sister Becky and her kids - Kelly, Ryan and Tristan came from their home in North Pole, Alaska to beautiful, sunny (ha ha) Arizona. The kids helped us put up our tree and get the Christmas decorations up. Their Dad is deployed to Iraq until next Fall. We love having kids around at Christmas time and they love seeing more than a couple of hours of daylight!

We had a fun Thanksgiving with our kids and grandkids. We'll start off with Tyce toddling around with his sippy.

Princess Haylee loves to push around her toy. When she gets to a wall, she looks back as if to say "Hey! A little help here!"

Ya gotta love the tubby pictures! This will be great blackmale material when they become teenagers!

The house is great for big parties. We had two big tables set up with room spare.

Time to Move In

This is how we look now. The first pic is the master bath vanity. I tiled the countertop myself and it actually turned out pretty good! We really like the mirrors we found at Lowes. They are alot cheaper than a big mirror across the wall and I think they look better.

Here is our kitchen - it turned out really nice. Once we got the construction dust off the floor (thanks Jill) it really looks good. We are very happy with the color we chose.

This is the other end of the great room looking toward the fireplace. The den / office is to the left and the door to the master bedroom is next to the fireplace. My friend Chris Skousen helped me hang interior doors and then Kendall, Cameron and I installed the trim. Gotta get the phone moved, satellite installed and move in.

Go to the Ohio

Cameron served his mission in the Cleveland Ohio mission and spent about 6 months in Kirtland. We have always wanted to go back there as a family and see where he served and visit some of the church histiry sites. The Kirtland temple was one of the highlights of the trip. We took the tour of the inside and walked the gardens and the cemetary on the north side. Kendall was surprised to find a number of Whitings buried there. It was amazing to stand in the place where so many miracles occurred.
Here is our group on the front steps of the temple. The steps as well as the front doors are original. The doors were sanded down a couple of years ago to reveal the original color.
Here we are in front of the Newel K. Whitney store. When Cameron was there, this was a public street and had quite a bit of traffic on it. It is now a walking tour and the church has made it a beautifull place.
This is the Johnson Farm where the prophet lived for a couple of years. This is the door where he was drug by a mob to a field and tarred and feathered. It was on these steps that he delivered a sermon the very next day.
Had to get in a picture of us with our two favorite traveling companions. This was a great trip and we all had a fun time. We got to meet a man that Cameron taught who joined the church and is now in the bishopric. He conducted sacrament meeting on Sunday. We also met a lady he baptized. Besides the spirit we felt at the sites we visited, the leaves were changing color and the scenery was beautiful. Check out April's blog for even more pictures.

Fall Colors

I had to do an appraisal in Greer so the Penster and I went over today (Saturday) and had lunch in Greer and looked at the leaves beginning to change. There is still a couple of weeks before they peak but there are some pretty spots as you can see :

The picture above is A-1 Lake which is right on the road and is a real nice spot. It was a little windy and rained off and on so there weren't many people there. Fall is a nice time of year. It's cooler but not cold, the leaves are turning, football, Thanksgiving, almost Christmas. What's not to love?

29 Wonderfull Years

Penny is out for a couple of hours so I want to take this opportunity to wish her a happy 29th anniversary. It was actually on Monday the 15th. I am greatly blessed to have Penny as my wife. When we started dating, I could tell right away that she had big heart and it didn't take long before I knew that this was the girl I wanted to be my wife. Penny has kind of a natural sweetness about her that comes across to everyone she meets. It always amazes me how people are drawn to Penny and will pour out their soul to her. She is literally the most compassionate person I know and when people confide in her they know that she really does care about them. Penny has had to overcome alot of adversity over the years. Some serious health issues and some stressfull economic times only worked to bring us closer together. Our kids have been a great blessing in our lives and our greatest source of enjoyment. Penny was born to be a mother. She was a natural and as a result of her example, we have two of the greatest kids any parent could want. Now we have been blessed with two of the most beautifull grandchildren in the world. Both of them love their grandma and to say she loves them is an understatement. Three years ago we almost lost Penny. A tear in one of her carotid arteries caused a 95% blockage which caused her to have a major stroke. Through the power of prayer, priesthood blessings and her own faith, she pulled through without any paralysis, memory loss or any of the affects you would expect from a stroke. I can't imagine how I could have survived losing her. After 29 years I still love Penny more and more every day. I hope I can always be the kind of husband she deserves and I look forward to the next 29. I love ya babe!

My Little Helper

I had a little helper today at the house. Tyce followed me around and babbled all day. Here we are taking a little lunch break. We have a little pile of sand that the bath tub will sit on and he sat and played in it for about an hour. He had alot more fun today than I did!

How to Abuse Your Inlaws

You may have noticed that the work on the house slowed way down when it got to the part that I started working on. Well, I got some help from Penny's dad, Uncle Bob and brother Mike. They started laying the flooring in the great room yesterday and have laid about 800 square feet of flooring so far. It's hard work and 90 % of the time you are on your knees.

The Triathlon

Today Cameron raced in his first triathlon, the Tri In The Pines in Show Low. He swam, biked and ran and lived to tell about it. Above he is starting the swim.

Celebrity Sighting

Penny, April and I walk every morning in our neighborhood. This morning we ran into none other than George Takei, "Mr. Sulu" from Star Trek! He has a cabin in our neighborhood and he and his "hsuband" were out for a walk. We each said good morning and walked by, I don't want to do the crazed fan thing even though I am a huge fan of the old Star Trek series. How cool is that! Maybe we could get William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy to come by for a bar b que!

finished the tile the guest baths. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out.
they still need to be wiped down again but this is pretty much what they will look like except with sinks and toilets :)
Instead of cutting tile to make a pattern in this shower, I used mosaic strips. Much easier and faster.
one lesson I learned is to not wait too long to sponge the grout or it turns into a really hard job. OK stop laughing. I already told you I'm a rookie tile setter.
Kendall, Cameron and I put T-111 siding on the porch ceilings and then Kendall trimmed it out with 1x3. Next is the master bath. the end is in sight!

Some More New Stuff

The granite countertops have been installed. We were originally going to do granite tile but the price of solid granite has come WAY down. We are thrilled at how it turned out.

This is the main guest bath shower. It still needs grout you can get an idea how it looks. This is the first time I have ever laid tile and I have a new found respect for the pros. By the way, that is a protective cover on the tub. I don't know if you can see it but I did a row of 6" tiles on diagonal about half way up. That's as fancy as I could get.
On the floor, I am doing a pattern with 12" and 6" tiles that match the shower. I think it looks sharper than plain rows of all the same size. The secret here is good knee pads. While all this sets up, I will get started on the other guest bath and then come back and grout. It makes me tired just thinking about it!

New Progress

Our friend, Ryker Kizzar, is a really talented stone mason and he just finished the stone on the fireplace and the island. I think it looks great.
The hearth is a solid slab of sandstone from Taylor. The stone has a kind of natural design in it and is really interesting. The fireplace will definitely be the focal point of the room.
The island was done in the same stone as the fireplace. The cabinets are installed behind it. I went with a staggered height to give it a little more dimension. J.R. Pearce did a great job on the cabinets.
Next is tile and flooring. It makes me tired and sore just to say it. The countertops will be going in next week also. Can't wait to see them installed. Stay tuned.

Fun with the Fam

Some New Stuff

The Cobra has a new home. All the trim and shelving is here and ready for me to get busy.

A Little Update

Just wanted to post a little update on what's been going on with us lately. The painting took longer than we thought but it is finally finished. Now on to cabinets, doors, tile, flooring, appliances, and fixtures. Believe it or not, we are getting very close to the end. Last Saturday we helped Cameron and Bethany move and had a great time with them and little Haylee. We are having a blast being grandparents and love to spend time with Tyce and Haylee. With a Little Help From My Girls

We have enlisted April & Bethany to decorate the guest bedrooms and baths. April has taken on the back bedroom and main guest bath. Bethany's mission is the front bedroom with the attached bath. They are both great decorators and we are excited to see what they come up with. Paint colors, bed spreads, windows, knick knacks, so many choices. Have fun girls!!

Painting

Here is what the outside looks like at this point.
We are painting the kitchen a dark brown. We have seen it in a lot of model homes and really like it. Our cabinets are natural hickory which should look really good together. It is a Sherwin Williams color called "otter". The dining room wall is a pale brown or beige color called "kilim beige". It's a stretch for Penny to go with colors but after seeing the model homes, she's coming around. If anyone has any suggestions for bedroom or bathroom colors, let us know.

Drywall

You know, when the drywall goes up it really starts to look like a house. It's alot easier to see the rooms when you're not looking through the walls. The stucco guys are already putting up styrofoam and lathe and will be be done by Wednesday of next week. That will probably be the next update unless something exciting happens.

First Party at the House

Here's the first party at the new house. We had a bunch of family and friends over for a picnic lunch Sunday after stake conference. Looks like we can fit a crowd in the great room.
Nice thing about bare plywood floors is no spill worries. Great company, good party!

Cacti Irradication Project

Yeah, I gotta get me one of these! This is the only way to go. It beats the heck out of a wheel barrow. My contractor was nice enough to let me use his skid steer to dispose of cacti.
This a roll off dumpster that goes on the back of a 10 wheel semi truck. We filled it half way with prickley pear cactus we pulled off the lot. I have never seen so much cactus on one lot in my whole life. Kendall came over and helped me pull cactus with shovels and rakes. We were full of needles by the time we were done. Kendall is great, you feed him lunch and you can get him to do anything! Anyway, the lot is alot more grandkid friendly now.

This whole project is designed around getting together as a family and having a kind of gathering place where all of our family and friends can feel welcome and comfortable. We have a long tradition of having everyone who can come over on Chistmas Eve. It's one of our favorite traditions and this house will be a great place to continue that custom. We would also like to have a little playground and a garden where the kids can grow their own Halloween pumkins and vegetables.

This is the water feature in the back yard. Just kidding! Penny and I went to Greer today to do an inspection and one of the lakes is over flowing into another one creating this awesome waterfall. I should have taken a video because the sound was so cool. Maybe we'll go back and do that. There are alot worse ways to spend an afternoon!

Happy Easter

All dressed up Easter afternoon and ready for church. We had a great Easter weekend at Cameron & Bethany's house. It was fun to have the little cousins together.
Here they are looking very sweet and innocent. This is just before Haylee toppled over and her head hit Tyce in the jaw and made him cry. Don't they look cute in their Easter outfits? Haylee has little green earings to match her dress. It's all about the accessories.

Settin' Trusses

This is fun stuff watching the big crane set the trusses. Penny wouldn't let me stay all day and watch, so I ran over for a few minutes and got some cool pictures.
I'll go back this afternoon and get some shots of the finished product with all of the trusses in place. It's really starting to look like a house now!

Update

Here are the big 'ol trusses that just got delivered. It's finally dry enough to get the truck in to the lot. Can't wait for the crane to start lifting these babies on!
Here's the front porch that was just poured yesterday.
Here is the back porch where we will live in the summer. The concrete is stamped to resemble stone and is stained a dark brown. It will look really nice with the final finish on it.

Ready for Concrete

This is where Penny will be spending most of her time. It is a 6' oval tub. Her little slice of heaven!

The weather has cooperated and the ground finally dried out enough to pour the garage floor and the concrete porches. All of the outside walls are up except the garage. The top photo is looking through the garage at the front of the house. The next photo is looking at the front porch and the front door.

Movin' Along

Here's an update on the house. The outsided walls are going up and the master bedroom walls are framed. That's me chillin' in the doorway to the master bedroom. That's Penny inspecting the work (lookin' intense). The weather finally decided to cooperate for a few days and the guys really made alot of progress. We got some snow flurries today but they didn't last long and the sun came out. The trusses get delivered this week and I will get some pictures of those massive trusses being hoisted up by a crane. Cool. I love watching big machines working.

More progress

It's starting to look like a house! Here I am standing in the kitchen or at least that's what it's going to be. The floor is on and the framing material is on site. My framers are at Disneyland this weekend but starting Monday we will see walls start to go up. Now is when it starts to get exciting (and stressfull). I admit I'm a little over the top with the house but I have been dreaming of building our house for a long time and now that it's a reality, I'm like a kid at Christmas!

Penny thinks I've lost my mind because I wake up in the morning with "how do feel about travertine tile in the bathroom?". I also spend hours on the computer researching suppliers on the internet. My obsession has paid off though. I have found some great deals on flooring, fixtures and other stuff. The problem with being an appraiser is that I am in some beautiful homes every day and my tastes tend to exceed my wallet but I have found that you can replicate an expensive look for a lot less money. For example, I am using granite tile for my countertops instead of granite slabs. This alone is saving me thousands. I am doing some really cool things on the house that I will show you later as the house progresses. Stay tuned!

Since it has been snowing and the progress on the house has been slowed for the moment, I thought I would talk about one of my other obsessions, my Cobra. I purchased it as a rolling chassis about 3 1/2 years ago. I put the motor and transmission in it and got it running. The original engine I bought turned out to be junk. After blowing head gaskets, swapping heads and other parts, I took it to a friend who is a mechanic here in Show Low, Andrew Burgess. He discovered the block was bad and since water doesn't lubricate as well as oil does, most of the internal parts had to be replaced as well. He found a good 351 block and installed a "stroker" kit to up the cubic inches to 392. Most of these set ups put out in the neighborhood of 430 horsepower! This is in a car that ways only 2300 lb.s or about 1000 lb.s less than a mustang. I am storing it at Cameron & Bethanies garage until mine is built. I am going to go on some runs this winter in the valley. As mid life crisis go, this is better than a mistress!

We are Sean and Penny Comerford. We live in Show Low, AZ and the reason we have started this blog is to keep people posted on the progress of our new house. Yes, we sold the house we lived in for 17 years and are building a new one! The foundaton is in and the floor will start being framed next week. I will post pictures of the progress as it goes along.
